SLS Art Award Discover Project

Some of our Y5 and Y6 children have been working with John from the Schools' Library Service on the Discover Project during the Spring term. This has been a 6 week programme of looking in depth at the novel 'War Horse' by Michael Morpurgo.

Narrated from an unusual perspective, Michael Morpurgo's War Horse tells a powerful story of humanity and friendship that touches people of all ages.

In 1914, Joey, a young farm horse, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. With his officer, he charges towards the enemy, witnessing the horror of the frontline. But even in the desolation of the trenches, Joey's courage touches the soldiers around him.

This is what some of the children said about the project.

"I really liked the fact that another person came in to do some really educational (reading) things with John. It has really boosted my confidence in reading and I would love to do it again. I also liked the fact that we did it with another class and learnt how they read". - William

"I enjoyed working with John and the rest of the group. I enjoyed the part of the book which we read in the penultimate week which included a lot of scenes and the beginning of the war". - Jack

"I enjoyed working with John to read and discuss War Horse. I enjoyed stopping every chapter and discussing what happened and what might happen next. At the end of every session I wanted it to last forever". - James

"I have liked reading this book with John and then talking about it at the end as a group. I think reading this book has built up my confidence with reading and would love to do it again". - Jake
