Year 5

Mrs Rowbotham is the class teacher in Year 5 and Mrs Brammer (Learning Mentor) and Miss Tilley support us in Year 5. Mrs Parkes teaches part of our class on a Monday and Tuesday.

We are busy with our learning throughout the week. We enjoy going on school visits, learning outside and reading books by our favourite authors. Our presentation skills have really developed and we are proud of the way we present our learning.

Our new topic in  Autumn 2 is called ‘Frozen Kingdom’ and is all about our planet’s coldest lands, which are incredibly beautiful, yet often deadly.

This half term, we’ll start by using globes and maps to identify the polar regions, comparing the Arctic and Antarctic. We’ll also think about how we can protect the polar environment. Then, we’ll investigate and find out about the brave polar explorer, Ernest Shackleton and what happened to his ship Endurance. Researching our favourite polar animals will be fun, and we’ll create animal artwork using different media. We will also use our ICT skills to produce a short animation based upon a polar-inspired story. This half term we will also be reading the novel ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis. We will follow the story of Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy as they journey through the magical world of Narnia. We will develop our vocabulary and inference skills as we read the text together. Our reading will then lead us into writing narratives, discussions, explanations and poetry. In Maths, we will be learning how to read and interpret line graphs and tables, develop our understanding of factors and multiples and calculate the area and perimeters of shapes.

We always try our very best at everything we do and we are keen and ready to learn!
